SWOP Questions and answers

What is SWOP? SWOP is Franciscan University’s Student Work Opportunity Program. Hundreds of Franciscan students work on campus during the school year, gaining valuable work experience, earning money, and helping to support the mission of the University.

Who is eligible to work in a SWOP position? Any student who is enrolled at least half-time is eligible to work during the fall and spring semesters.

Do I need to have a SWOP award in order to work in a SWOP position? No. Any half-time student can work on campus, whether they have a SWOP award or not.

What kind of jobs are available? Over 280 different positions exist in almost every campus department. Positions include secretarial/office assistants, custodial and grounds workers, referees and athletic trainers, phonathon callers, lab assistants, and many others. How do I get a job? Students may contact departments directly about available jobs (contact information is included in the online SWOP position listings). Also, at the beginning of the fall semester the University conducts a SWOP Job Fair where representatives from most campus departments are available to talk to students, answer questions, and accept applications.

Before working, students must complete required employment and tax forms for the SWOP office, and they must complete a Work Agreement with their supervisor.

It is the student's responsibility to conduct a job search, apply for jobs, interview, and be hired. They are responsible for identifying a SWOP position that is suitable to their skills, abilities, interests and schedule. Please note that a financial aid letter, indicating that a student is eligible for student employment, is NOT a guarantee of employment.

If I get a job on campus, do I need to keep it forever? No, we expect that many students will have several different SWOP jobs during their college career. However, it is generally expected that a student make a commitment to a particular job for at least one semester.

How many hours do students work in SWOP positions? Each job has different expectations, but most students work between 5 and 12 hours per week. Some work as many as 20 hours per week during the school year. The number of hours depends on the student and the needs of the SWOP position.

How much do SWOP jobs pay? SWOP positions currently pay from $7.85 per hour to $9.30 per hour, depending on the responsibilities and qualifications of each position. For more information on hourly wages, visit the SWOP homepage (see below).

What advantage do SWOP jobs have over off-campus jobs?
SWOP jobs are convenient—no off-campus transportation is needed.
SWOP jobs are flexible—most SWOP positions offer students shifts of 2, 3 or 4 hours.
SWOP jobs are social—students get to work with fellow Franciscan students.
SWOP jobs are meaningful—even the most mundane work plays an important role in supporting the mission of Franciscan University.
