STEUBENVILLE, OH—Kiplinger Personal Finance Magazine has included Franciscan University of Steubenville as one of its “best values” in private higher education, ranking it 73rd among the top 100 private universities in the nation.

“The institutions in Kiplinger’s report represent schools that provide high-quality academics as well as affordable costs even in these tough times,” said Jane Bennett Clark, senior associate editor for Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

Franciscan University scored high marks across a range of measurable standards, including the test scores of incoming freshmen, the ratio of students to faculty members, and the four- and five-year graduation rates.

Included in the top 100 private universities are such nationally recognized institutions as Princeton University, Yale University, Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Southern California.

In addition, Franciscan University is the only Catholic university in the Kiplinger rankings for private universities that is also among the 22 schools in the Cardinal Newman Society’s Guide to Choosing a Catholic College.

“Small classes, individual attention, and academic mentoring are among the hallmarks of a Franciscan University education that Kiplinger recognizes with this high ranking,” said Joel Recznik, vice president for Enrollment at Franciscan University. “It also inherently acknowledges the wide range of professional programs grounded in solid Catholic teaching that we provide our students.”

The average test scores of incoming students was one of the most highly weighted factors in Kiplinger’s formula. The average ACT score for Franciscan students this year is 25.9, which is 20 percent higher than the national average. The average SAT score is in the 75th percentile, meaning Franciscan students score better than 75 percent of those taking the SAT nationally.

The annual Kiplinger top-100 ranking appear in Kiplinger’s December issue, on newsstands now. The full list of schools can be found at
