May 28, 2013 STEUBENVILLE, OH— Father Nicholas Polichnowski, TOR, and Father Richard Davis, TOR—two priests with strong ties to Franciscan University of Steubenville—recently moved into key Third Order Regular leadership positions. Father Polichnowski, a former nursing professor and chairman of the Board of Trustees at Franciscan University of Steubenville, was elected May 23 as minister general of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis. He will now oversee the ministries of more than 900 TOR priests and brothers serving in 12 countries. “I congratulate Father Nicholas on his new appointment. Franciscan University is grateful for the leadership he has given us over the years,” said Father Terence Henry, TOR, president of Franciscan University of Steubenville. “He will be in our prayers as he helps the worldwide TOR community continue the evangelistic work of our founder, St. Francis of Assisi, who was commissioned by God to ‘go and rebuild my Church.’” Father Polichnowski’s appointment means a new position for Father Richard Davis, TOR, longtime vice president of Community Relations at Franciscan University. Father Davis replaces Father Polichnowski as minister provincial of the Sacred Heart Province, based in Loretto, Pennsylvania, which sponsors Franciscan University. As minister provincial, he will direct the activities of more than 130 priests and brothers who serve in parishes, schools, and other charitable ministries in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, and other locations. “I’ve already encountered several people in the Steubenville community who are grieving Father Richard’s departure,” said Father Henry. “He will be sorely missed by the entire University community, the friars, students, and by his many friends in the Ohio Valley.” Over his 17 years at Franciscan University, Father Davis became involved with the Steubenville Rotary Club, the Faith in the Future Prayer Breakfasts, the Diocese of Steubenville’s Presbyteral Council, the committee to restore the Grand Theatre, and many other community and Church endeavors. He also served as local minister for Holy Spirit Friary on Franciscan University’s campus. Father Davis will remain involved with Franciscan University, however, as his new duties include serving as chairman of the Franciscan University Board of Trustees. “Father Richard has our prayerful support as he begins to provide leadership to the Board of Trustees. His years of service at Franciscan University and in the local community will serve him well as he helps the University moves forward,” said Father Henry.
