All Invited to Celebrate Franciscan University Homecoming Weekend

Homecoming Weekend, October 5-7, 2012

STEUBENVILLE, OH— Franciscan University of Steubenville’s annual homecoming weekend combines Parents’ Weekend, an Alumni Reunion, and the St. Francis Festival into one grand celebration October 4-6.

Events fittingly begin with a Mass in honor of the University’s patron, St. Francis of Assisi. The Solemnity of St. Francis Mass will be held on Friday at 4:00 p.m. in Finnegan Fieldhouse.

The Alumni Reception and Banquet will take place Friday evening, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Seven alumni will be honored for their achievements. They are: Father Michael Gaitley, MIC, ’99, recipient of the Bishop John King Mussio Award for Faithful Service to the Church; Dr. Adam Tate ’94, recipient of the Dr. John J. Carrigg Award (education); Col. Laurence Burgess ’69, recipient of the Alumni Citizenship Award; John Fischer ’83, recipient of the Rose M. DeFede Faithful Franciscan Award; Dr. David Born, ’92, recipient of the Father Dan Egan Award (healthcare); Albert “Ray” Challis, ’67, recipient of the Professor Edward J. Kelly Award (business); and Aaron Cunningham, ’07, recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. To purchase tickets for the Alumni Reception and Banquet, register at

Other events on Friday night include the dramatic production, A Celebration of the Life of St. Francis, and the ever-popular Student Talent Show.

Saturday morning features the Kelly Roggensack Memorial Races at 8:00 a.m. Then, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., enjoy games, entertainment, and refreshments at the medieval-themed St. Francis Festival. Activities include a children’s costume competition, a Living Chess Match, a Tomato Theatre performance, food, and arts and crafts booths.

A Festival of Praise will take place Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in Finnegan Fieldhouse, followed by a free concert featuring Ceili Rain in the Piazza dei Santi. Ceili Rain plays an original blend of pop-rock music with an Irish flavor.

The weekend also includes Baron athletic events—the women’s tennis team will play on Friday and Saturday at 4:00 pm. and 1:00 p.m. respectively, and the men’s rugby team will play on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
