SIFE-FUS-BaltimoreSTEUBENVILLE, OH— Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Chapter of Students in Free Enterprise, known as SIFE Enactus, won the champion trophy in their league at the Enactus Regional Competitions in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 22.

This is the second consecutive year and the fifth time in 10 years that the Franciscan University SIFE Enactus student club has won the trophy.

The regional competition involved colleges and universities from five states that competed on how to best address the economic, social, and environmental needs of their community.

The Franciscan University Chapter of SIFE Enactus competed against Eastern University from Saint Davids, Pennsylvania; Millersville University of Pennsylvania from Millersville, Pennsylvania; and Carnegie Mellon University from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Franciscan team was awarded the champion trophy in part for its student-run programs that improve the lives of citizens locally and internationally. These include Project Bootstrap and the SIFE Entrepreneurial Alliance Program, which encourage the development of new local businesses, and programs that assist those in need, such as Just $1 for Africa, the Urban Mission Project, the Water for Africa Project, the AIM Pregnancy Project, and the Adopt-a-Highway Project.

“In essence, we believe that we have successfully taken Christ into the marketplace by implementing these constructive and creative programs,” says Dr. Thomas Kelly, SIFE Enactus advisor and professor of business.

The Franciscan University SIFE Enactus Chapter was represented in Baltimore by Cecilia Wetzel, junior management and marketing major; Anthony Kueneman, senior marketing major; C.J. Norris, sophomore accounting, international business, and Spanish major; Emily Buss, sophomore English major; Chris Meehan, freshman international business major; Toni Brown, freshman international business and Spanish major; Barbara Porter, senior accounting major; Ryan Gietman, sophomore accounting and finance major; and Patrick Hicks, senior accounting major.
