A message from Father Terence Henry, TOR
Dear Franciscan University Friend,
The great British writer and convert G.K. Chesterton noted that the purpose of travel “is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.”
That’s certainly been my experience as I’ve explored many of our country’s national parks. I’ve traversed the spectacular landscape of the Grand Canyon, the breath-taking splendor of the Grand Tetons, and the sublime diversity of Yellowstone, to name a few—and all stand in striking contrast to the rolling hills of the Ohio Valley. Our country is a land of contradiction, and the sheer beauty and creativity of God’s creation awe and humble me.
With its sweeping views, majestic glaciers, and native and Russian infl uences, Alaska has the unquestionable allure of a foreign land. In fact, the port town of Sitka was once known as the “Paris of the Pacifi c” for its European fl air. Though I’ve traveled to Alaska before, I’m eager to return to see even more of our 49th state. I invite you to join me August 10-17, 2013, on the “Witness to Wonder” Inside Passage cruise where visits to fascinating sites, including Sitka and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, will be coupled with a time of spiritual renewal and refreshment.
On this Franciscan Cruise, I’ll be accompanied by two engaging speakers sure to challenge and inspire. Dr. Regis Martin, a Franciscan University professor of dogmatic and systematic theology and a panelist on EWTN’s Franciscan University Presents, will un-lock the mysteries and beauty of the sacrament. Apologist and host of The Journey Home and Deep In Scripture on EWTN, Marcus Grodi will take an in-depth look at Scripture in light of Church teaching.
We’ll also strengthen our faith through the celebration of Mass. As a participant on this cruise, you’ll have many opportunities to attend lively sessions with our speakers, getting to know them and fellow participants as you dine and attend special receptions together. This won’t be a typical cruise by any means.
Spending time each summer in communion with God’s created order is something I cher-ish, and my excursions are particularly meaningful when Franciscan University alumni, students, and friends come along. Please consider joining Dr. Regis Martin, Marcus Grodi, and me as we explore magnifi cent Alaska, its stunning vistas refreshing our bod-ies, minds, and spirits.
