Health Center
Campus Health Insurance Policy
Franciscan University has always maintained a policy that all students must have health insurance to cover any medical emergencies beyond what can be handled by our Health Center clinic.
All full-time undergraduate students will automatically be enrolled in a new University-sponsored plan. The fee for an entire year is $588, but for students entering in the spring semester will begin coverage on January 1, 2011, with a cost of $388. The fee will appear on the student's bill. Those students who have insurance through another plan--their parent's/guardian's plan or a personal plan--can waive this coverage and the fee. There are a few other things you should know about this coverage and how it applies to certain Franciscan activities like athletics and studying abroad. So please keep reading.
Note: The plan is insured under a policy issued by Nationwide Life Insurance Co., Columbus, Ohio, and is administered by Consolidated Health Plans Co. (CHP), Springfield, Massachusetts. Our local representative is Wells Fargo Insurance Services, based in Columbus, Ohio.
To waive the plan
To waive this coverage, you must complete the online waiver (link below--please read what's between here and there) no later than September 15, 2011.
Graduate Students
Full-time graduate students can elect to buy into this plan, but the rate will be $1,422 based on various factors.
Go to CHP Student Health Plans for further information.
While Studying Abroad
Those who study for a semester in Austria while students at Franciscan will be covered under a different plan—contact the Study Abroad Director for further information. Students will need to waive this plan to avoid being charged for it automatically.
Athletics
Students who participate in intercollegiate sports will be covered under a different plan during all activities related to that athletic endeavor. This plan does not incur a separate fee of its own; it is covered by the fee charged for participation in intercollegiate sports.
Term of Coverage
Coverage is on a 12-month basis, so coverage that begins at the start of an academic year will continue through the following summer until the beginning of the following academic year.
