Zach See can't quite remember what he did to get labeled "stroppy" (i.e., a "wisecracker") by one of his professors at Oxford University last spring.

"I may have made a sarcastic remark in class about Herodotus," he says vaguely.

Whatever the misdeed, "stripy" tops the list of favorite slang words the senior English literature major from Chantilly, Virginia, brought back to Franciscan University after his semester abroad. Besides having an arsenal of insults his friends can't understand, he's also returned with a deepened passion for books, all things British, and French Fries…or "chips" as the Brits would say.

"Every night after class, we'd go to the street vendors for chips," Zach recalls. "The vendors would actually stay open until 4 a.m. I'm going to miss that."

If he suffers any withdrawal symptoms, Zach can blame English professor Dr. John Holmes, who first tipped him off about the Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, which takes 40 American students to Oxford every semester.
