  • Transition/Admission Process

    Suggestions to guide you through the early steps:

    1. Begin with careful planning in high school by taking the right courses to get into college.   Meet with your high school guidance counselor to assist in scheduling the courses needed for Franciscan University.
    2. Take a college admissions test early.  It is recommended you take it during the spring semester of your junior year.   If you do not score high enough to meet Franciscan’s standards (ACT 21, SAT 1000 combined score on the math and the reading), be willing to review any weak areas and retake during the fall of your senior year.
    3. There will be nothing in your admissions application about disclosing your disability.  It is further suggested you do not disclose a disability in your essay for admission.  Admissions must evaluate your academic record without consideration of a disability. 
    4. It is in your best interest to contact Franciscan University early.  If you are considering FUS, make an appointment with Admissions and Student Academic Support Services during your junior year.  Students with a disability are encouraged to apply early to make a smooth transition into college life. If you have been accepted to FUS and need more specific information about our services and documentation requirements, contact the Director of Student Academic Support Services (SASS), Tina Maroni, at 740-284-5358 or TMaroni@franciscan.edu.
    5. You will be asked to provide documentation about your disability.  You can find out exactly what documentation you need to provide SASS by clicking on “Documentation Guidelines.”  You will be required to provide documentation only if you get services.  To receive services, you must ask for them.  This is done by scheduling a meeting with the Director of SASS and making a formal request.
    6. Your high school IEP, though informative, is not adequate as documentation and the services you receive in college may be quite different from those received in high school.  Your services and accommodations will be based upon the documentation and will compensate for your disability.  You will also need to advocate for yourself and ask professors yourself for the accommodations that you need.  Our staff will train you in how this should be done.
