The Health Center is part of the Wellness Center located on the lower level of Finnegan Fieldhouse and is available to all University students. The Mission of the Health Center is to provide high quality prevention, health education, and primary healthcare services to enhance student living and learning.
We deal only with non-emergency illness and wellness concerns. All students fill out a Confidential Health Record Form," which our office keeps on file. This gives our doctors and nurses some background information from which to work when students come to us.
Please note: There is a fee for some lab and physician services.
Pharmacy ServicesPrescriptions can be filled through a cooperative program with the Kroger Pharmacy in Steubenville or Follansbee Pharmacy in Follansbee, WV. The pharmacies deliver to the Health Center Monday through Friday. Students must pay all co-pays at the time the prescription is picked up at the Health Center. Students may also take the prescription to any pharmacy that they choose. Some over-the-counter medications are available at the Health Center as well.
Counseling ServicesThe Mission of Campus Counseling is to utilize the best of mental health care with Christian principles to assist our students in leading more effective and satisfying lives. Counseling involves an assessment interview to develop a personal plan for individual and/or group treatment. The counselor and client will agree to work within a brief treatment model to deal with problems identified in the personal plan. Since the Campus Counseling Center is NOT a full-service mental health clinic, some students will be referred to mental health services in Steubenville for the services needed and they will be responsible for all expenses incurred for those services.
The Campus Counseling staff is composed of highly trained counselors and social workers who will provide students with the highest quality mental health treatment:
Diana Bessler, LPCC-SChristin Jungers, LPCC-SDon Kissinger, LPCC-SFr. Jim Morman, TORCynthia Vaudrain, LPCC-SMary Jo Yanda, LPCC-SJoseph Loizzo, LISW-S
To utilize the counseling services, complete a Counseling Initial Intake Form and mail it to Joseph Loizzo at the Wellness Center. One of the counselors will contact you shortly for the first appointment.
Students will be assessed and referred for these types of services to providers in the local community as necessary. Diagnostic and lab testing is performed at Trinity Medical Center by arrangement through the Health Center. Dental referrals can also be scheduled using local dentists. Although referrals are made at the expense of the student, most health insurance plans will cover normal lab charges, etc. Students must check with their insurance providers before making these appointments for referrals.
Student Excuse for Class or WorkA written class/work excuse is given only if a student has been examined by a nurse or nurse practitioner at the Health Center and the examiner requests that the student not attend class/work.
In the case of multiple absences due to long-standing illness, the student may request a formal letter be sent to the appropriate faculty member or dean of the Faculty Offices informing them of the student’s medical problem. A copy of this letter is also given to the student.
It is the student’s responsibility to attend class. If illness prevents this, the student has the obligation to let the professor know about the absence and how long he or she anticipates being out of class. Note: Even if a medical excuse is provided, individual professors will decide whether an absence will be excused. Even if a medical excuse is provided, individual professors will decide whether an absence will be excused. No medical excuse can be given retroactively to a student who was not seen by health Center staff, e.g. if you are sick in the morning and miss class, the Health Center will not give you an excuse later that day.
