The Franciscan Difference | Franciscan University of Steubenville
  • The Franciscan Difference

When God created you, he made you like no other person. You are unique, singular, unrepeatable in all creation.

Similarly, Franciscan University is like no other school. Here, you’ll find faith and reason, wisdom and grace, mercy and truth, action and contemplation—all working together to create an educational experience that is as singular as you are.

    Academics

AcademicsIn the classroom, you’ll study under world-class scholars and seasoned practitioners who are as committed to Christ and his Church as they are to the advancement of knowledge and professional excellence. A strong Catholic core curriculum will steep you in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and help you to see the world as God made you to see it. At the same time, with 42 majors and 35 minors to choose from, you’ll receive the professional formation you need to succeed in your chosen career path.

    Community

CommunityOn Franciscan’s campus, you’ll discover lifelong friends, mentors, and spiritual fathers and mothers who will welcome you, challenge you, and encourage you as you strive to grow in wisdom and faith. In the classroom, your professors will know you by name, and through faith households, sports teams, campus residence halls and other student groups, you’ll become part of a community that will walk with you as become the gift God made you to be.

    Fidelity

Fidelity2At Franciscan, you’ll be part of a family of believers who love Christ and his Church with an authentic passion. You’ll study under theology professors who teach the Faith in all its fullness. You’ll receive the sacraments from priests who proclaim the Gospel without compromise. And you’ll grow in friendship with students striving to live their faith in everyday life. Franciscan University was the first Catholic college in the country to require that all faculty and staff responsible for faith formation on campus swear an Oath of Fidelity to the Catholic Magisterium, and that tradition continues to this day.

    Tradition

TraditionAs a student at Franciscan, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in two thousand years of Catholic traditions. Perpetual Adoration, the Rosary, Morning and Evening Prayer, Festivals of Praise, Benediction, weekly praise and worship, the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite Liturgy, and the Byzantine Liturgy all have a place in the life of Franciscan University. So too does the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, offered three times daily in our chapel, and Confession, which is heard Monday through Thursday on campus. At Franciscan, if it’s part of the Church’s tradition, it’s part of our life as well.

    Service

ServiceMission trips to third-world countries, mornings spent praying outside abortion clinics, nights spent feeding the homeless, and countless other service opportunities await you at Franciscan University. Here, we believe that, as Catholics, we’re not called to hide from the culture; we’re called to engage it and transform it. Works of mercy, evangelization, chapel ministry, and social media outreach give you the chance to do that now, as a student, and prepare you to continue serving God and others in the years ahead.

    Sports

SportsWhether you play on one of our 16 NCAA Division III teams or take on your friends during intramural competitions, you’ll discover that sports at Franciscan University are about so much more than just winning. They’re also about building character, growing in virtue, and bearing witness to your faith, on and off the court. With coaches and teammates who will challenge you spiritually as much as they challenge you athletically, sports at Franciscan are just one more way to grow in faith during your time here.
