A Marriage of Faith and Reason

Ultimately, remaining true to John Paul II’s vision for Catholic universities comes down to integrating faith and reason in every aspect of campus life. Like the medieval scholars of St. Francis’ day, our professors teach our students to apply the light of faith to reason. In turn, they also show them how reason applied to faith produces a stronger and truer love for God. This happens not just in theology and philosophy classes, but in biology, drama, and accounting classes.

It also happens outside the classroom, in residence life programs, intramural sports, and missionary outreach. We know it’s not enough for our students to just know the faith; they have to live it. And they do. From annual mission trips to Third-World countries to weekly prayer vigils outside an abortion clinic in Pittsburgh, our students put their faith into action.

Finally, faith and reason, academics and student life are all united in the
campus’ rich sacramental life. Mass is offered three times a day in Christ the King Chapel, while confessions take place four times a week. In the Portiuncula Chapel, modeled on the chapel rebuilt by St. Francis in Assisi, eucharistic adoration goes on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Blessed Sacrament is also reserved throughout campus in the chapels in nearly every residence hall and academic building.

The Eucharist is truly the center of life at Franciscan University, and that shows in the great joy our students bring to everything they do.
