The Franciscan friars serving in administration, on faculty, and on staff give an important witness to the richness of religious life and the priestly vocation, as do dozens of other priests and sisters working and studying at the University.

A New Home for the Friars: $4 Million

A crumbling foundation, routine flooding, regular power outages, and rotting framing have made the friars’ on-campus home, Holy Spirit Friary, all but uninhabitable. The new friary, built high atop the hill overlooking Franciscan University, will feature modest but comfortable accommodations for friars and guests, as well as a stunning new chapel and oratory.

For almost 60 years, the Franciscan Friars of the Sacred Heart Province of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis have considered Franciscan University to be one of our most important missions. We have sent a steady stream of friars to the University, and they have devoted their lives generously to serving the students and other members of the community.

The presence of our friars on campus is absolutely essential to minister to the students’ spiritual development and to preserve the Franciscan character of the school and the University’s commitment to ongoing conversion, missionary outreach, and the integration of faith and reason in all aspects of University life.

Building a new home for our friars will assure that our Franciscan presence on campus will remain strong, accessible, and viable for years to come.

On the one hand, we want to provide for the friars a living space that is safe and sound, free of leaking roof and flooding basement! We also want to create an environment more conducive to ministry. The friars need additional meeting space for counseling and spiritual direction and more rooms for visiting friars and clergy. In the future, God willing, additional friars may also be assigned to the University to serve the spiritual needs of its growing community of students.

We thank God for calling our friars to serve Franciscan University since its beginning, and we ask His help and yours as we move into an even brighter future of service
