It has been about six years since I first learned about Franciscan University of Steubenville. Our youth minister and his wife were graduates of the school, and they brought the fruits of the University into our parish. That is what Franciscan graduates do: They take the Franciscan way of life out into the world and teach others how to live that way as well.
Franciscan University did teach my family how to live. It taught us how important faith is and how to be joyful in all circumstances. That is what really stands out in my mind when I think of Franciscan: the joy you encounter there. The friars, the faculty, the staff, the students, everyone you meet has so much joy, and joy is something you see far too little of in the world today.
As a mother, I couldn’t be happier with the education and formation my daughter, Lauren, is receiving at Franciscan. Someone told me recently how amazing it is to listen to her talk and how fascinated they are with what she knows. I feel the same way.
Now I am serving my first term on the University’s Board of Trustees. It is a bit of a switch, because instead of just thinking about my daughter, I now have to think about the whole picture. So what I am trying to do is think of all the students as if they were my own. And when you know these students, you know that’s a pretty easy thing to do. They really are remarkable.
