Ann Baker Accounting Major, Class of 2006 Hometown: Dallas, Texas My dad is always mailing me articles about companies that have committed fraud or engaged in unethical business practices. Along with the articles he also includes a note that says, “Good major, honey.” And he’s not being sarcastic. He’s proud that I’m going into a field where there is such a need for people who are committed to doing the right thing, no matter what the cost. The problem in the business world, like so many other professions, is that people simply don’t know right from wrong. And even if they do, they don’t always have the courage to stand up for what is right and change things for the better. Franciscan University has not only given me that courage, but it has also given me the wisdom to really understand why some things are right and why some things are wrong. It’s more than just a knowledge of moral laws, but an understanding of the eternal truths underlying those laws. That’s what sets Franciscan apart from other schools. There are lots of places I could have gone to study accounting, but I can’t think of any other school that could have taught me accounting, showed me how Catholic theology and philosophy apply to accounting, and inspired me to live out my faith in the marketplace. Franciscan University is preparing me and my peers to go out into the world and change it. I couldn’t ask for more from a college education. |
