The first time I came to Franciscan University, I went into the chapel. It was evening, and so many students were there, quietly praying in the Presence of our Divine Savior. The Eucharist is really the center of life at this school, which is one of the reasons the University has such an impact on higher education and the culture.
When nobody believed it was possible, Franciscan was a very genuine Catholic school. Now there are more. Other people are getting the message. Some older Catholic schools are even turning back to where they should have been. Franciscan led and is still leading the way.
Franciscan University students are also leaders. No matter what their major is, they graduate with a solid foundation in Catholic philosophy and theology. They bring that with them into the sciences, the business world, the media, wherever they go. They understand that there are objective norms, there are virtues, and they matter. I can’t begin to describe how important that is for our world.
If you could evaluate a university based upon the amount of good it does for people, as human beings and children of God, this University would be high on the list. Maybe at the top of the list.
