Professor Don Materniak
Professor of Business
|Professor Don Materniak knows the world of finance from the inside out. Before making the switch to higher ed in 1984, he worked at both Ernst and Young and Merck Pharmaceuticals, two of the largest companies in the country. That real-world experience gives his teaching a practical edge, and shapes his commitment to his students.
“The way I see it,” Materniak says, “my students and I are one team with one objective—to make them as good as they can be. I really feel like I’m teaching my friends and getting them ready to leave here and become professionals in their own right.”
Materniak has an open-door policy, and his students take advantage of it, dropping by regularly to go over accounting problems, discuss career options, or just talk about the latest Pittsburgh Pirates game. And their professor loves every minute of it.
“That’s what I love about teaching here—the personal contact with the students. They’re really wonderful.”
