    Anna Sattler

    Class of 2014

    Majors: German

Good news is worth sharing—even when it’s midnight in Europe. That’s why Anna Sattler ’14 didn’t hesitate to wake up her parents who live in Vicenze, Italy, where her father works as a civilian for the U.S. Army. Her news? She had just received a Fulbright Scholarship.

Fulbright recipients are selected by the U. S. State Department on the basis of academic or professional achievement. In 2012-2013, fewer than 20 percent of applicants were accepted into the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Program.

Anna, who graduated in December 2013 with a degree in German and a minor in history, began teaching English to students in a German school in Bavaria for nine months in fall 2014.

Sattler joins the ranks of two fellow students and five Franciscan University professors who have received the prestigious award.

“I love languages in general, and German is a scholarly language with a vast body of literature, as well as an important business language,” she says. “It was a real benefit to study German on the undergraduate level at Franciscan.”

She’s especially excited to be in Bavaria. “My mom was praying for Bavaria so I can easily find a Catholic church. Bavaria is proud to be Catholic. It is Pope [Emeritus] Benedict’s home and our family loves Benedict.”

Anna’s family is drawn to him because most of her family members came into the Catholic Church in Easter 2007, while Benedict was pope.

The Fulbright experience will pave Anna Sattler’s way to reach her goal to be a language professor or possibly work for an energy, chemical, or pharmaceutical company that has ties to Germany.
