We're located in the Lower Level of Finnegan Fieldhouse.

Here at the Wellness Center: Counseling Service, located on the ground floor of Finnegan Fieldhouse, our door is wide open for you. Whether you have a serious concern or simply a curious question, our staff encourages you to call or drop by to see us. Everything that’s important to you is important to our staff.

    Counseling Service: Our Mission

Your emotional and mental well-being affects everything else in your life. If you are experiencing an emotional difficulty, we are here to help you work through it. If you are concerned about a friend, roommate, or family member’s psychological health, we are available for consultation.

Our staff of professional counselors and social workers strives to blend the best in mental health care with Christian principles to help students lead effective and satisfying lives.

    Getting Started

To make a counseling appointment, please follow these simple steps:

    • Complete our Counseling Request Form and put it in a sealed envelope addressed to:
      Matthew Burriss, MA, LPCC-S
Interim Director of the Wellness Center
      Finnegan Fieldhouse
    • A member of the Counseling Service staff will either call or email you to set up the first appointment.

    What Happens Next

After an assessment interview, a counselor will work with each student to create a personal treatment plan. This plan might include individual or group counseling, along with instructions for you to research new ways to deal with the problems or to try to incorporate new behaviors. You always retain the right to decide for yourself whether to do these activities or not.

As part of the treatment plan, you will be encouraged to identify your strengths and weaknesses to help you manage the problem. One strength will be to recognize how your faith in Christ can assist you in resolving your problem.

    Services We Provide

    • Individual Counseling: Initial one-hour session with a staff counselor, development of a treatment plan, and possible further counseling with a staff counselor, graduate student counselor, or referral to an outside provider. Services are based on a brief treatment model, followed by a referral as needed. (Please note that, for training purposes, a student from our Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program will normally be present during the initial assessment interview.)
    • Group Counseling: Groups target specific areas for change in a supportive atmosphere, begin at the start of each semester, and are free of charge.
