  • An Extraordinary Education

Franciscan University is no ordinary university, and the education you’ll receive here is no ordinary education.

At Franciscan, we know that God wants you to grow in wisdom and understanding, discovering more about who he is, who you are, and how you’re called to live. We also know that God has called you to serve him in this world in some particular way—as a scientist, economist, teacher, or social worker—and you need to acquire the skills necessary for answering that call.

A Franciscan University education will help you achieve both.

Our strong core curriculum for undergraduates will root you in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, providing you with a solid liberal arts education and helping you discover the truth about God, man, and the created world.

At the same time, our broad range of majors and specialized programs will allow you to pursue almost any field of study, from chemistry and nursing to psychology, political science, sacred music, engineering, and many, many more.

With a student/faculty ratio of 15:1, you’ll study under world-class scholars who know you by name and care about your success, both as a student and as a person. You’ll also work closely with a faculty advisor who can help you make informed decisions about the courses you take at Franciscan, as well as internships, professional development opportunities, and graduate studies. One of Franciscan’s greatest strengths is the sense of Catholic community it fosters, and that hold true inside Franciscan’s classrooms as much as it does in any other area of University life.

At Franciscan University, faith and reason, knowledge and experience, past and present all meet, giving rise to an education that is as intellectually challenging and spiritually enriching as it is professionally formative. This type of education will stay with you always, transforming every aspect of your life—how you work, how you play, how you pray, and how you love.

This University has formed me, through its culture so founded in the authentic truth of Christ, to see the world in light of that truth. Far from limiting my scope of thought, I have been cultivated deeply by professors that have challenged me to work with diligence....

    Michael Blankenberger's list image

“The professors at Franciscan have high expectations—they want students to do their best with whatever project they’re working on,” says Michael Blankenberger ’12. It’s a lesson that transitions outside the classroom, too, he points out. “After you graduate, you can’t just fluff it either.”

As a finance major, Michael certainly worked hard to live up to those high expectations.

  • Faith transforms. It heals wounds, and it heals cultures. Faith gives life, joy, strength, peace, compassion, and courage. Faith makes all things new.

This is why putting faith into action is the great task of every Christian’s life. It’s how we show our love for Christ. It’s how we thank him, praise him, glorify him, and honor him. It’s how, with the help of grace, we become saints.

This is also why, at Franciscan University, we don’t just teach the Faith in our classrooms. Rather we strive to live it everyday, in a thousand little ways.

That holds true on campus, where the Faith comes alive in our chapel, bonds men and women together as brothers and sisters in faith households, and informs the cutting edge research that takes place in the laboratories of the Franciscan Institute for World Health and the Franciscan Institute for Science and Health.

Franciscan University’s desire to translate our Catholic Faith into action also propels both students and faculty off-campus to serve the poor at home and abroad through Missions of Peace and Works of Mercy.

Our faith likewise calls us into the public square to engage in the most pressing debates of the day through the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life.

And it charges us to use all the tools of modern communication—from television shows (Franciscan University Presents), magazines (Franciscan Way), and scholarly journals (The Catechetical Review) to Facebook and our online media portal FaithandReason.com —to bring the Good News to the highways and byways of the culture.

Through conferences, pilgrimages, media, social outreach, and cultural engagement, Franciscan University strives to leave no corner of the culture untouched by the love of Christ. During their time here, our students partner with us in that mission, and when they leave Franciscan University, they continue to make it their own, putting their faith into action wherever Christ calls them.

That’s the Franciscan legacy: a lived faith, a shared faith, a faith alive.
