The State of American Higher Education Conference | Franciscan University of Steubenville
  • The State of American Higher Education Conference

    April 6-7, 2018

Sponsored by the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life

American higher education is in turmoil like never before. Student debt is at an all-time high, casting doubt on the value of a college education. The liberal arts are imperiled. Serious campus debate and free speech are threatened by politicization. An “anything goes” morality is the norm on many campuses.

Against this backdrop, the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life at Franciscan University of Steubenville will host a two-day conference, “The State of American Higher Education,” to be held at Franciscan University April 6-7, 2018.

“Leading scholars will address how the integrity of the American university can be restored and discuss these issues in depth, many of which have substantial implications in the broader culture,” said Dr. Stephen Krason, associate director of the Veritas Center and a political science professor at Franciscan University.

Twelve presenters will confront leading issues facing secular, religious, private, and state institutions. “Some speakers will build a case for religiously-affiliated institutions—those serious about their religious identity—to lead the way in renewing the American university,” said Krason.

About the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life

The mission of the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life is to seek the truth about the good. Toward that goal, the center encourages and supports inquiry that is grounded in faith and reason, and focused on ethical questions of significance for contemporary culture in the areas of business, law, politics, social services, education, and the arts. Inspired by Pope St. John Paul II’s teaching in Veritatis Splendor that, too often, “human freedom has been detached from its essential and constitutive relationship to truth,” the Veritas Center is committed to clarifying and applying the natural law and Christian teaching, and defending the permanent validity of their precepts. In this way, it furthers the mission of Franciscan University of Steubenville to promote and teach the truth, under the guidance of the magisterium of the Catholic Church.

This will be the fifth annual Veritas Center conference. Through research, writing, and academic conferences, the Veritas Center exists to bring faithful Catholic scholarly reflection to bear on the most pressing ethical questions in contemporary culture.
