    Majors: Priestly Discernment Program

    In June 2012, Daniel Ulishney and his two classmates became the first priests ordained in the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in six years. So it’s no wonder that he had to hit the ground running.

    Father Dan, parochial vicar for four parishes, reports to three different pastors. He says Mass at a different church each day, visits the sick, drops in at the Catholic school, does marriage prep, and on any given day attends several meetings of parish staff, parish councils, youth groups, ministries—the list goes on and on. Another man might find it overwhelming, but Father Dan is up for the challenge.

    Dr. Patrick Toner ’01, MA ’02 calls himself a “proud alumnus” of Franciscan University. Now an associate professor of philosophy at Wake Forest University, Toner received both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in philosophy from Franciscan, then his PhD from the University of Virginia. He subsequently spent a year on a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Philosophy of Religion.

    “Accounting is a broad field, and at Franciscan I also got the tools and knowledge to understand business and economic principles,” he notes. Greg says his professors, “the cream of the crop,” were confident, caring, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure students understood the coursework.
